On local and international fronts, Dr. Troy has led the 5,000-member church to understand and embrace the ministry of missions. In 2005, New Salem fed over 16,000 of its neighbors in a missions thrust called 40 Days of Community and sponsored children ages 9-12 from South Africa, as part of the International Children Outreach Ministry (ICOM). As a part of the ICOM visitation, South African children lived with families within the congregation and participated in the church’s instructional and after school programs. New Salem has supported both adult and youth missionaries to South Africa, Botswana, Africa, New Orleans, and Aruba to serve those infected with AIDS, addicted to drugs and involved in forced prostitution, to share with them the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

One of the short-term missionaries of New Salem, said, “When you look for a Pastor with a heart for Missions – you see Pastor Keith Troy. He has a passion for seeing lives transformed”. Dr. Troy said in a recent interview, “I remembered Lott Carey as a youth, and I am excited and humbled to be President. I want to expand the support base to churches nationally and locally as well as increase the financial commitment to missions.”

The Lott Carey Convention is named after Rev. Lott Carey, a former slave, and one of the first American and Baptist missionaries to West Africa in 1821. African-American Baptists who were committed to a substantial foreign mission thrust – especially on the African continent founded The Lott Carey movement in 1897.
